Defensive midfielder Casemiro entered his name in the record books on Monday (June 29) by becoming the second-oldest player to score a goal for Brazil in a FIFA World Cup match. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star scored Brazil’s opening goal in their Round of 32 clash against Japan in Houston at the age of 34 years and 126 days.
The record for the oldest player to score a goal for Brazil in a FIFA World Cup match is held by Bebeto. He was 34 years and 137 days old when he found the net against Denmark in the quarter-finals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup in Nantes on July 3.

The goal by Casemiro in the 56th minute helped Brazil level the scores against Japan in their first knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli then struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time (90+5′) to seal a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory for the five-time champions.
Arsenal defender Gabriel provided the assist for Casemiro’s equaliser, while Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães set up Martinelli’s winner. The assist was Guimarães’ fourth of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making him the tournament’s leading assist provider.
After defeating Japan, Brazil will now face the winner of the Ivory Coast vs Norway match in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
