Two youths drown in canal in Punjab's Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur, Jun 6 (PTI) Two youths drowned in a canal here on Saturday, while two others had a narrow escape, police said.

The incident took place in the evening near Gajj village under the Hariana police station area when four youths, all aged around 20-21 years, entered the Kandi Canal while returning from a visit to the Dholbaha Dam.

Police said Jasvir Singh of Tanda and Prabhjot Singh of Harsi Pind village were swept away by the strong current of the canal, while Deepak Kumar and Santosh Kumar, both residents of Tanda, had a narrow escape.

With the help of locals and passersby, the youths were pulled out of the canal and taken to the Community Health Centre at Bhunga, where doctors declared Jasvir Singh and Prabhjot Singh dead.

Balvir Singh, in-charge of the Bhunga police post, said the bodies had been sent to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur for post-mortem examination.
