EFL League Cup defending champions Newcastle beat Fulham 2-1 on Wednesday to move into the semifinal of the tournament as Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley netted for the Magpies.
Wissa put Eddie Howe’s men ahead
in the 10th minute of the fixture before Sasa Lukic cancelled it out six minutes later. But, Miley’s stoppage time header at St. James’ Park ensured that the Toon Army reached the final-four of the tournament.
Newcastle ended a 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy when they won the League Cup last season and Howe is eager for more.
“It was important to bounce back from Sunderland, to come back in a positive fashion,” he said.
“We want to be competitive and win trophies – this one we had a great experience last year we want to do that again.”
A poor showing in a 1-0 loss to local rivals Sunderland on Sunday increased the pressure on Eddie Howe’s team to respond.
Wissa scored his first goal for Newcastle in his debut start, finding the net after just 10 minutes. Sasa Lukic quickly equalised for the visitors. The match seemed destined for penalties until Miley managed to get a touch on Sandro Tonali’s enticing delivery.
Manchester City secured their spot in the semifinal of the EFL League Cup with a 2-0 victory over Brentford, thanks to goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Cherki gave City the lead in the 32nd minute with a strike from outside the box, and Savinho sealed the win with a goal in the 67th minute.
Guardiola, who made seven changes to his lineup, rested star striker Erling Haaland as his team achieved their sixth consecutive win in all competitions, ahead of the busy festive Premier League schedule.
The previous day, Chelsea earned their place in the two-legged semi-finals early next year with a 3-1 win at Cardiff.
