England are taking on Sri Lanka in the opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Friday (June 12). In the tournament opener at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England rode on Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s century (105* off 62 balls) to post a mammoth total of 219/1 in their allotted 20 overs.
England’s total of 219/1 is now the highest team score in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
The previous record was also held by England. In their Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 match against Pakistan in Cape Town on February 21, 2023, England scored 213/5.

The 2009 Women’s T20 World Cup champions are now the first and only team in the tournament’s history to have crossed the 200-run mark on more than one occasion.
Apart from Wyatt-Hodge, opening batter and wicketkeeper Amy Jones scored 53 off 38 balls, while captain Nat Sciver-Brunt remained unbeaten on 46 off just 22 deliveries.

Wyatt-Hodge, who became the first England player to score a century in the opening match of a Women’s T20 World Cup edition, shared a 135-run partnership off 82 balls for the first wicket with Jones. She then added an unbeaten 84 runs off just 38 balls for the second wicket with Sciver-Brunt.
For Sri Lanka, Malki Madara was the lone wicket-taker, finishing with figures of 1/51 from her four overs.
During her innings against Sri Lanka on Friday, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt also broke the record for the most runs scored by an England player in the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Sciver-Brunt needed 31 runs to surpass former England captain and current head coach Charlotte Edwards’ tally of 768 runs in the tournament. She reached the milestone on the final ball of the 19th over of England’s innings when she scored her 31st run of the match.
