A 38-year-old doctor from Andhra Pradesh died by suicide in Hyderabad, with police saying she had been deeply upset after her US visa application was rejected, according to news agency PTI.
The woman, identified as Rohini and originally from Guntur district, was found dead in her Padma Rao Nagar apartment on November 22.
Police told PTI that the incident came to light after her domestic help raised an alarm when she did not respond to knocks on the door.
The domestic help reportedly informed the doctor’s family, who lived close by. When the family reached the flat and found no response, they broke open the door and found her dead.
Officers said initial observations indicate that she may have consumed a large quantity of sleeping pills or injected
herself with a substance late on the night of November 21.
However, they said that the exact cause of her death will only be established after the detailed post-mortem report is submitted.
Her body was handed over to her relatives following the medical examination.
Investigators also recovered a suicide note from the residence.
Police told PTI that the note suggested she had been battling depression and mentioned her distress over her visa being denied.
Her mother, Lakshmi, speaking to PTI, said that her daughter had been eagerly preparing to travel to the United States for work but had been under stress after her application was turned down.
She said Rohini had been keen on specialising in internal medicine and had chosen to live in Padma Rao Nagar so she could be close to libraries while she studied.
“She was a brilliant student and had completed her MBBS in Kyrgyzstan between 2005 and 2010. Her academic record was excellent, and she had big dreams for her future,” Lakshmi said, describing her daughter’s dedication to her profession.
Lakshmi also recalled advising Rohini to pursue a medical career in India, but said her daughter believed that working conditions and earnings were comparatively better in the US, where doctors typically attend to fewer patients each day.
According to Lakshmi, Rohini’s emotional state had deteriorated significantly in recent weeks as she waited for news about her visa. The constant uncertainty, repeated disappointments, and the final rejection left her “mentally exhausted and isolated,” her mother said.
Police said Rohini had not married and appeared to have focused entirely on building her career in medicine.
A case in this regard was registered.
