Meanwhile, Shafali Verma’s blazing 87 set the tone, but despite fighting innings from Deepti Sharma and Richa, South Africa clawed back to restrict India to a below-par 298/7 in the Women’s World Cup final in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2.
Deepti’s run-a-ball 58, laced with three boundaries and a six, along with Richa’s brisk 34 off 24 deliveries (3x4s, 2x6s), gave India the late push they needed. The duo added 47 for the sixth wicket after the innings stumbled in the middle overs, with Jemimah Rodrigues (24) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (20) not being able to capitalise on their starts.
A determined South Africa dented India’s hopes of posting a huge first-innings total with breakthroughs, capitalising on a slowing track that offered grip to the spinners as the match progressed after a two-hour rain delay.
