India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup are underway as the team hopes to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2011. The team came agonisingly close to winning the silverware in 2023 when it made it to the title clash unbeaten before losing to Australia.
A lot has changed since that final. Rohit Sharma is no longer the captain with a new leader in Shubman Gill taking charge. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia says the board has already begun working on a long-term roadmap for the marquee tournament, which is scheduled to take place in October-November 2027.
As per Saikia, the Indian team will have sufficient ODI cricket in the lead-up to the event as part of the team’s preparation strategy.
“The BCCI is planning a clear path leading up to the
2027 ODI World Cup. We will have enough ODI matches between now and the start of the tournament in October 2027. We have announced the team for the three ODI matches in England, scheduled from 14th to 19th July,” Saikia was quoted as saying by IANS.
On Sunday, the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, named a 15-man squad for a three-match ODI series in England to be played next month. There aren’t any surprises with the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Harshit Rana being included while Yashasvi Jaiswal, Harsh Dubey and Prince Yadav haven’t made the cut despite being part of the recent home series against Afghanistan.
The BCCI secretary added that the planning process is being carried out in coordination with the team’s support staff and selection committee, with a collective focus on building a strong squad for the global tournament.
“The selectors are on board with the support staff and the head coach,” he said.
India have entered a fresh ODI World Cup cycle and the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, to be played from July 14 to 19, is expected to serve as an important step in assessing players and combinations for the future.
The Gill-led squad recently clean swept Afghanistan 3-0 at home.
