Indian men’s team head coach Gautam Gambhir has said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to ‘wait’ for his chance to play again in the T20I side, adding that someone like Sanju Samson, who has done well for the team over a long period of time, will play ahead of a rookie.
Sooryavanshi didn’t get a single match in India’s 3-0 series victory over Afghanistan on Thursday and the status quo could continue at the upcoming Asian Games, where VVS Laxman will coach the Shreyas Iyer-led team.
Gambhir made it clear on Thursday that Sooryavanshi may have to wait, with Samson and Abhishek Sharma likely to be preferred in the near future on the back of their past performances.
“From Vaibhav’s point of view, it’s again a very clear conversation that he has to
wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do,” Gambhir said at the post-match press conference.
India thrashed Afghanistan by a whopping 127 runs to wrap up the three-match series on Thursday.
“But again, someone who has done extremely well over a period of years obviously will always be ahead of someone who has just got into the team. Whenever he gets that chance, you will get a longer run as well,” Gambhir said.
“And that’s what Indian cricket is all about. We want competition, we want that talent in the dressing room. But sometimes that is how cricket goes. Whether it’s a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old, you have to wait for opportunity,” Gambhir added.
During India’s UK tour, Samson was dropped from the playing XI after three low scores, one against England and two against Ireland, paving the way for Sooryavanshi to make his debut.
But the youngster was also left out after failing to make an impact in his first three games.
