Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has said that no questions remain on the calibre of Rohit Sharma and ace batter Virat Kohli, adding that although it is not easy to return in full flow after a break,
the duo is too experienced to face any problems for the same.
Rohit and Kohli last turned out in national colours during the three-match home ODI series against South Africa, which ended on Saturday, December 6.
Rohit and Kohli returned to competitive action for their respective domestic teams during the 2025–26 Vijay Hazare Trophy group stage. Both impressed with hundreds before linking up with the Indian team in Vadodara ahead of the series opener.
“Now there are absolutely no questions regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I think they will score runs in Baroda. It isn’t easy to return after a break, but these two are so experienced,” Irfan said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
“After this series, the next ODI will take place after 6 months,” Irfan said.
After the ODI series against New Zealand, the focus will shift to T20s, with the calendar featuring the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2026 Indian Premier League. India’s next ODI assignment is slated for July 2026, when they tour England for a white-ball series.
The upcoming series will also see the return of captain Shubman Gill from injury. He is all set to lead India in ODIs at home for the first time, looking to make amends after a forgettable debut series in Australia last year.
“Shubman Gill isn’t only coming after an injury, but also coming after losing his place in the T20I side. He is more comfortable in the ODI format. Sure, his average has dropped down there as well over the last few matches, but he is a solid player,” Irfan said.
“Now that Gill has come in, Jaiswal has to sit out, right? Unfortunately for him, he has to miss out, but it is the captain who is returning. Gill’s preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup begins right now,” Irfan added.
