A now-viral post on Reddit has triggered a debate on why more men seemingly want marriage and children, while more women are increasingly choosing to remain childfree.
The post, originally shared on the Reddit community r/childfree, quickly spread across social media platforms and drew thousands of reactions from users discussing changing attitudes toward parenthood.
In her post, the woman reflected on how, during her childhood and teenage years, men were often portrayed as being afraid of commitment, marriage, and fatherhood. According to her, the narrative now appears reversed, with many women openly rejecting traditional family structures while some men actively seek “traditional marriages” and nuclear families.
She also questioned what may
have caused this cultural shift, pointing to the growing influence of podcasts and online personalities promoting family-oriented masculinity and traditional values.
The discussion resonated strongly with many women online, several of whom argued that women historically did not necessarily “want” children more than men, but were instead socially conditioned to believe marriage and motherhood were unavoidable milestones.
“Women have always been conditioned to have kids. It’s very much a pillar in the patriarchy,” one Reddit user wrote.
Another user commented, “Its all about control.”
A third person argued that the real difference today is that women now have more freedom to make their own choices. “I think it wasn’t “women used to want children, now they don’t”, but rather that women are now able to choose and live their lives how they see fit. There’s also less social stigma regarding having no children and/or no partner,” the comment read.
Some users also linked the debate to unequal responsibilities within parenting and marriage, saying that women continue to bear the larger emotional, physical, and professional burden associated with raising children.
“Men now don’t truly want kids. They just want control back,” one user claimed.
Another wrote, “Men, often, do not want kids, they want a woman to have their kids.”
The debate gained further traction after the screenshots were reposted by the Instagram page @hearherstories, where users continued discussing the realities of relationship expectations.
“If men really wanted children they would adopt regardless of their relationship status. They want the image of a family without the work,” one Instagram user commented.
“Men want children, but not to parent them,” another wrote.
One woman shared a personal experience, saying, “Literally broke up with 2 fiancés over this – both wanted kids, I never did. They both got them and both ended up miserable and in nasty divorces so there’s that for whatever it’s worth.”
Others pointed toward the physical realities of pregnancy and childbirth. “Men don’t have to be pregnant or go through labor so what’s one more kid?” one comment read.
Another user added, “I would also want many things if it was at someone else’s expense. Sure!!!”
