Delhi Weather News: Delhi residents can expect a welcome break from the scorching summer conditions, with rainfall and lower temperatures forecast to dominate the coming days. Weather systems active over north India are expected to keep the national capital under cloudy skies, bringing showers, thunderstorms and strong winds.
The changing weather pattern follows heavy rainfall recorded on Thursday afternoon and is likely to provide relief from the high temperatures experienced in recent days. However, authorities have cautioned that thunderstorms and gusty winds could temporarily disrupt traffic, particularly during peak commuting hours.
Temperatures Expected To Fall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms,
lightning and strong surface winds during the morning hours. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 36°C and 38°C, while minimum temperatures may range from 23°C to 25°C.
Wind speeds could reach 40-50 kmph during storm activity, with occasional gusts touching 60 kmph.
Meteorologists have also indicated a shift in wind direction through the day. Winds are expected to arrive from the southwest during the morning before turning northwesterly around midday and eventually easing into a northeasterly flow by night.
More Showers Likely Through The Day
While the morning spell is expected to be the most active, Delhi could witness another round of light rainfall during the evening. The latter phase is likely to be less intense, with mostly cloudy conditions prevailing across the city.
The IMD has indicated that isolated pockets may experience very light precipitation, thunderstorms and lightning from the afternoon through the night. These weather conditions are expected to keep temperatures in check, reducing any immediate risk of heatwave conditions.
Residents have nevertheless been advised to remain cautious, particularly in open areas, due to the possibility of lightning strikes and short-lived episodes of strong winds.
Western Disturbance Driving Weather Change
According to the SG report, the current weather pattern is being driven by an active western disturbance moving across north India and interacting with moisture-bearing winds over the plains.
The system, originating in the Mediterranean region, has contributed to a rapid shift from hot and dry conditions to cooler, wetter and more unstable weather across Delhi-NCR.
Yellow Alert In Place For Delhi-NCR
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for parts of the Delhi-NCR region for the next 24 to 48 hours. The alert signals the likelihood of scattered thunderstorms, lightning activity and strong winds.
Meteorologists note that such weather events are common during early June, when pre-monsoon activity begins strengthening across northern India ahead of the seasonal monsoon’s advance.
