And in a world that often tries to “retire” women once they hit a certain age, this 72-year-old former school principal from Jammu is proving that the only thing you should be dropping in your 70s is the gear. While most people her age are being told to “take it easy,” Vidya is busy navigating the chaotic streets of Jammu, proving that “log kya kahenge” (what will people say) has no place in the rearview mirror.

Who Is This Driver Dadi?

Vidya’s story is more about a lifelong itch for independence. Married at 19, she spent 40 years shaping minds as a teacher and eventually a principal. But when

retirement hit, the “quiet life” felt a little too quiet. She wanted to fulfill a decades-old dream: getting behind the wheel. The road wasn’t smooth. When she first approached a driving school at nearly 60, she was met with skepticism. Instructors called her “imperfect” and suggested that handling heavy traffic at her age was a tall order.
