Meeting someone for the first time is usually awkward enough. A recent post shared by a Jaipur man has sparked a heated discussion online about where people should draw the line during a first meeting.
Abhishek Agarwal, a Jaipur-based man, shared a screenshot of his conversation with a woman he was asked to meet after her father came across his profile on Shaadi.com. According to Abhishek, the woman suggested meeting at an upscale place in Jaipur, which he felt was expensive for a first meeting.

In the chat, the woman asked him to meet at Townsend. Abhishek replied, “See, I don’t wanna meet in a bar in our first meeting. Let’s meet at any cafe near your place. Tell me the name, and I will be
there.”
He further added, “Also, I am not looking for a very high-end place, usually in first meet, I end up spending a bomb of money, not intending to do that anymore, specifically in first meetings.”
The response he received did not go down well with him. The woman replied, “Sorry, let’s meet another time, you save your money first.”
After her message, Abhishek responded with, “Long live feminism.” The woman then replied sharply with “Go to hell” and blocked him soon after.
Sharing the screenshot on LinkedIn, Abhishek expressed his frustration in a detailed post. He wrote, “Yaar ye kya baat hui? Pehli baat ladki ko itni mehengi jagah pe milna kyun hai? Banda pasand karna hai ya Menu card? Dusri baat, har baar Main hi kyun paise du? Main insaan hoon ya ATM? (Why does the girl insist on meeting at such an expensive place? Is she interested in the person or the menu card? And why am I always expected to pay? Am I a human or an ATM?)”
He further playfully said, “And last but not the least. Block karke mera comeback hi kharab kar diya. What is this behaviour? Zero civic sense (And blocking me ruined my comeback. What kind of behaviour is this? Zero civic sense).”

The post drew varied reactions online, with one user jokingly commenting, “Isiliye bolta hun arranged marriage best hoti hai. Bharatiya sanskriti ke hisaab se chalo, kabhi niraasha nahi hogi (This is why I say arranged marriages are the best. Follow Indian culture and you won’t be disappointed.)”
Another wrote, “I can totally relate. Meeting someone for the first time, and that too in a bar? Bro… red flags already waving.”
But not everyone saw this as just a disagreement over a meeting spot. A section of users warned that such situations could be linked to dating scams that have been reported in several cities.
According to them, some women allegedly ask their dates to meet only at expensive bars or restaurants where they have an arrangement with the staff. Once the person arrives, they are encouraged to order heavily, after which an inflated bill is presented. In some cases, the date is pressured to pay the full amount, with the woman reportedly receiving a share from the establishment.
