The United States has reportedly threatened to halt intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine unless it agrees to the framework of a peace deal brokered by Washington, sources told Reuters on Friday.
According to sources, Kyiv is facing more pressure from Washington than in any previous peace talks, with the US demanding that Ukraine sign the proposed deal framework by next Thursday. The sources noted that the US is eager to bring an end to the war but is seeking significant concessions from Ukraine in the process.
“They want to stop the war and want Ukraine to pay the price,” one source said.
A delegation of senior US military officials met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday to discuss a path forward for peace.
The meeting was described by the US Ambassador to Ukraine and the army public affairs chief, who were part of the delegation, as a success.
The officials emphasised that Washington is pushing for an “aggressive timeline” to finalise the deal between the two countries.
This pressure from the US comes after Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine is working on a peace proposal drafted by the US. However, Zelenskyy stressed that any deal must ensure a “dignified” peace for Ukraine, particularly as the document contains several elements that align with Moscow’s demands.
“We are working on the document prepared by the American side. This must be a plan that ensures a real and dignified peace,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post following a call with European allies.
