On Day 2 of the four-day Test taking place at Civil Service Cricket Club, he entered his name in the history books by breaking a 50-year-old record of the highest individual score by a New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter in an away Test. Blundell played a knock of 186 runs from 292 balls for the Tom Latham-led side in the historic Test against Ireland as a No. 6 batter and scored 22 fours and 3 sixes.
Blundell’s score of 186 runs in the first innings of the ongoing match is 34 more than Warren Lees’ total of 152. Lees scored 152 runs for New Zealand as a designated wicketkeeper-batter in the first innings of the Karachi Test played
against Pakistan from October 30 to November 4 in 1996.
