When people think of Indian post offices, they often imagine old rooms, long lines and slow work. That picture is now changing. A new post office at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) in Surat is showing a fresh side of India Post. This is the city’s first next-generation post office, and at first glance, it feels more like a cafe than a government office. Photos of the space have gone viral on social media and surprised many.
Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia shared images of the post office, featuring walls with bright graffiti, postcards on display and a classic red letter box, which adds charm. The space also has bookshelves, photo frames and seating areas where visitors can relax, read books and enjoy
a cup of coffee.
According to Times of India reports, this modern post office is part of India Post’s plan to upgrade 46 post offices across India that are located inside major education campuses like IITs, IIMs and NITs. The new post office at SVNIT was officially opened by Dinesh Kumar Sharma, the postmaster general of the Vadodara region, along with SVNIT in charge director KP Desai. Jyotiraditya Scindia played a major role as he wants India Post spaces to feel fresh, modern and connected to today’s generation.
Sharing the glimpse on X (Formerly Twitter), Jyotiraditya Scindia wrote, “Not our usual post office. India Post has levelled up. SVNIT Surat now hosts the city’s FIRST Next Gen Post Office, a revamped, student-friendly space with modern services and room to ideate. This is how we connect with the new generation their way, while staying rooted in our age-old trust and ethos of #DakSewaJanSewa.”
What Are The Timings?
The SVNIT Surat Post Office usually works during regular India Post hours. It is generally open from 8 in the morning to 4 in the evening and offers various services. Since the post office is located inside the campus, the timings may change slightly on some days.
Do They Offer Parcel Pickups via WhatsApp And How To Request?
During the opening of the new post office, a WhatsApp pickup service was also launched for the Surat Postal Division. A special number, 6359883465, has been made available for the public. People living within the postal area can now send a message on this number, via WhatsApp, to request pickup of their postal items from home.
