Makar Sankranti Bank Holiday 2026: Makar Sankranti, one of India’s major harvest festivals, is being celebrated on January 14, 2026, leading to confusion over whether banks are open or closed today. As
per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank holiday calendar, several public and private sector banks across regions will remain closed today.
Along with Makar Sankranti, festivals such as Pongal and Magh Bihu are also being observed in different parts of the country, which has resulted in a bank holiday in multiple states.
Bank holidays in India are state-specific, depending on the location of the bank branch. According to the official RBI holiday calendar, many cities and states will see banks shut on January 14. These festival-related holidays are classified under the Negotiable Instruments Act by the central bank.
