A glance at X (formerly Twitter) will give you a glimpse into the exhaustive discourse around Ben Stokes’ captaincy, his future as an England cricketer and leader of the Test squad. The much-celebrated all-rounder from England, who has produced his best during seemingly lost causes and turned them into improbable victories, found himself in a sea of trouble after a late-night excursion to a nightclub with a fellow teammate ended with a bystander with stitches.
Stokes and Gus Atkinson were at a nightclub, celebrating their victory in the first Test at Lord’s against New Zealand during the early hours of Monday, when their celebrations were cut short after an alleged altercation with Totoa Auvaa, a 21-year-old rugby player. It has been widely reported
that Auvaa threw a punch at Atkinson, which he purportedly missed. That punch, however, landed on a security personnel member nearby, who allegedly required stitches. Then, a video showing Stokes throwing punches in the brawl began circulating on social media.
ECB Investigates
The governing body of cricket in England, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), did not appreciate the news. A set of guidelines, including a midnight curfew, was put in place for the cricketers following disciplinary issues and reported breaches of conduct in the recent past. Questions of right and wrong were quickly pushed aside as the reports of Stokes and Atkinson allegedly breaching curfew laws took centre stage.
As the ECB was still “investigating” the incident, conflicting reports of Stokes considering retirement and perhaps hanging up his boots as a cricketer mid-Test series against the Kiwis emerged. In subsequent media reports, it was learned that the “retirement talks” may have been on the extreme side and that once the dust settled, the England captain may be slapped with a petty offence rather than having to give up his illustrious career.

Amid the whirlpool of escalating chatter, a few X users began circulating low-quality, pixelated videos of Stokes allegedly throwing punches in the UK streets.
So Is Ben Stokes Video Real?
Messages of heartbreak began pouring in as cricket lovers began prepping for the unconfirmed retirement of Ben Stokes. Others shared footage of Stokes throwing punches in a street brawl, using the ugly visuals to make the point that a captain who couldn’t control his temper off the field may ultimately pay for it with the armband.
The video carried The Sun’s watermark, lending it credibility that made it difficult to dismiss outright. And yes, the video was real.

Bristol Brawl 2017
While the amateur video of Stokes engaging in a physical altercation was indeed legitimate, it was an old video shot in 2017. An incident that not only threatened his career but also kept him away from cricket for 15 months.
The altercation took place outside a nightclub in the early hours of September 25 in Bristol, following an ODI match between England and West Indies. Stokes threw punches at two men after a confrontation that began when he intervened. He took objection to an alleged homophobic incident, a detail that was learned during his trial in 2018, where he was acquitted of affray.
Recounting the incident during England’s triumphant ICC World Cup 2019, Stokes admitted that he was no angel and had nothing to prove. “It’s always going to be there. It’s always going to be with me and people are always going to ask me about it. I’m fine with that. I’ve dealt with it. What I have learnt is that the people I need, who are important to what I do and who I want to be there, are around me,” Stokes told the Red Bull bulletin.
Chelsea Nightclub 2026
No videos have been made public from the recent incident involving Stokes and Atkinson. According to The Telegraph, Stokes and Atkinson were present in the Chelsea nightclub Rex Rooms’ VIP area when a confrontation broke out involving the two English cricketers, 21-year-old Saracens prospect, Auvaa, and a member of the England security team.

What’s Next?
Both Stokes and Atkinson will sit out the second Test against New Zealand from June 17. The extent of punishment would only be determined once the ECB had concluded their investigation on the matter.
“Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible,” the ECB said in a statement.
