Sri Lanka women’s cricket team captain Chamari Athapaththu entered her name into the history books on Tuesday (June 23) by becoming the first player in the world to score a century in run chase of a ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match.
The 36-year-old left-handed batter opened the innings for Sri Lanka in their chase of 131 runs against Ireland in a Group B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the County Ground in Bristol on Tuesday and remained unbeaten on 106 off 61 balls. She smashed 17 fours and two sixes to guide Sri Lanka to a comfortable nine-wicket victory.
Before Athapaththu’s remarkable knock, the highest score in a successful run chase in a Women’s T20 World Cup match belonged to Shemaine Campbelle. The West Indies batter had
made an unbeaten 90 against New Zealand in Southampton on June 13, 2026, during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
