R Madhavan has finally revealed why he was missing from Rang De Basanti’s reunion. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s coming-of-age political film, Rang De Basanti, released in theatres in 2006, and completed 20 years just a few days ago. Starring Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan, R Madhavan, Alice Patten and others, the film broke all opening box office records in India upon its release.
As the movie completed 20 years, the team of Rang De Basanti came together for a special screening of the film in Mumbai. Several inside photos and videos from the screening surfaced on social media, giving fans a sneak peek into how the cast celebrated 20 years of the iconic film. Fans couldn’t help but notice that R Madhavan
was absent from the celebrations.
R Madhavan said, as quoted in a Hindustan Times report, “I was at a shoot abroad when the event took place, and couldn’t fly back in time. I really missed it, and I wish I could have been there with all of them to celebrate this iconic film.” He added that the reunion was originally planned for January.
However, it had to be postponed after the January 28 plane crash in Baramati, Maharashtra, which killed all aboard, including then Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. “We didn’t want to celebrate at that time, naturally. It was a very, very tragic, heartbreaking event,” R Madhavan said.
Meanwhile, Atul Kulkarni, who played Lakshman Pandey in Rang De Basanti, shared a lovely group photo from the reunion. Aamir Khan was seen in the centre, while Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor, and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra were also seen posing around him. Aamir’s ladylove, Gauri Spratt, was also seen in the photo.
Soha Ali Khan also shared a lovely note saying that the cast of Rang De Basanti showed up 20 years later. She also mentioned missing R Madhavan, Kirron Kher, Anupam Kher and other cast members who couldn’t make it to the reunion. One video clip showed Aamir, Kunal, Soha, Siddharth, Sharma, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, producer Ronnie Screwvala and others cutting a huge cake to celebrate 20 years of the film. She also shared a ‘then-and-now’ photo with the cast.
Rang De Basanti, which was released on January 26, 2006, follows a group of carefree youngsters whose lives change while working on a documentary about freedom fighters. As they step into the shoes of revolutionaries, they awaken to corruption and injustice, prompting them to take a powerful stand that reshapes their lives.
The film was honoured with a National Film Award for Best Popular Film and was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 BAFTA Awards. Additionally, the film was also chosen as India’s official entry for the Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
