Fed Interest Rate Decision October 2026: The US Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75%-4.00% despite stubbornly high inflation, while providing little hint about the central bank’s next moves.
“Inflation remains elevated,” the Fed said in a statement released after its two-day policy meeting. Holding off on an increase will allow “the accumulation of more information” that will help determine what policy the Fed should pursue “to ensure a timely return of inflation” to the central bank’s 2 per cent inflation target, the statement said.
The Fed, led by Chairman Kevin Warsh, raised its benchmark rate last month for the first time in three years, defying President Donald Trump’s demands for rate cuts, in an effort to get inflation
back to its 2 per cent target in a “timelier” manner. The Fed is tasked by Congress to combat inflation, and it does so by lifting rates to slow borrowing and spending and cool price increases.
Inflation in the US picked up in September, when consumer prices rose 3.7 per cent compared with a year earlier. The increase was much bigger than the 2.4 per cent rate in February, just before the Iran war.
What Does It Mean for Indian Markets?
Thomas Priju, portfolio manager at Karma Capital, said, “While the US Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75%-4.00%, the decision is not necessarily a dovish signal for global equity markets. The 10–2 vote, with two policymakers favouring a 25-basis-point hike, highlights the divergence within the committee as inflation remains elevated.”
He added that for Indian equities, the implications could be significant. A further increase in US interest rates could keep US bond yields and the dollar elevated, putting pressure on emerging-market capital flows and increasing volatility in the Nifty. “High-valuation stocks and segments dependent on foreign portfolio flows could remain particularly sensitive to changes in global liquidity conditions.”
“However, the impact on Indian markets will also depend on domestic earnings growth, valuations and the trajectory of foreign investor flows. Investors should remain selective and focus on companies with strong earnings visibility and balance sheets, while monitoring US inflation data and the Fed’s subsequent communication for clues on the future rate trajectory,” Priju said.
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, said, “Indian markets are likely to remain range-bound and volatile, as investors assess global monetary policy cues alongside persistent macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties. The US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at 3.75%-4.00%, with market participants now focusing on the Fed’s policy commentary and its implications for global liquidity and risk appetite.”
He added that crude oil remains a key headwind for domestic markets, with WTI trading around $102 a barrel, keeping macroeconomic concerns in focus. Geopolitical tensions also remain elevated, with little evidence of diplomatic progress towards de-escalation, adding to uncertainty over the near-term outlook.
