Rohini Kalam, India’s former international jujitsu player, has reportedly died by suicide at her residence in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. She was 35. The police are conducting an investigation even
as no suicide note was recovered from the spot.
As per police, the incident took place at the family’s home in Arjun Nagar. Rohini’s younger sister, Roshni, found her hanging in her room before she alerted family members.
The police have registered a case, and an investigation is underway.
Rohini was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Roshni hinted workplace harassment may have led to her sister’s death.
Rohini, who was working as a martial arts coach at a private school in Ashta, had returned home on Saturday.
“She was worried about her job. The faculty at her school were troubling her. Her school’s principal was troubling her. I could sense it from the way she was speaking on her phone,” Roshni was quoted as saying in media reports.
According to reports, the incident happened when Rohini’s parents were away from home. While the mother was at a temple alongside another daughter, her father – former employee of the Bank Note Press – was also out for some work.
Roshni says that her sister had breakfast on Sunday and spoke to someone on the phone before she returned to her room and locked the door from inside.
Rohini Aspired To Become IPS Officer
Her father revealed that Rohini wanted to become an IPS officer and turned down several marriage proposals. She also underwent surgery for a lump in her stomach earlier this year and wasn’t keeping well either.
Rohini regularly participated in international events, including at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou (China), while she was India’s sole representative at the World Games in Birmingham.
She started competing professionally from 2015 and went on to win bronze in the 48 kg category at the Thailand Open Grand Prix 2022 before adding another bronze in the duo classic event at the Asian Jujitsu Championship 2024 in Abu Dhabi.
