The festive season is set to gather momentum in September 2026, bringing a series of holidays for school students across different parts of India. From Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi to Ganesh Visarjan and Milad-un-Nabi, several festivals are expected to affect school calendars during the month.
For students in some states, festival holidays will coincide with regular weekly or second-Saturday breaks, creating extended weekends. Delhi students got a holiday on Friday, September 11, due to arrangements for the BRICS Summit being held in the national capital. The event will be held on September 12 and 13.
While Telangana and Andhra Pradesh students are set to get a three-day break from September 12 to September 14 for Vinayaka Chavithi. The break begins
on September 12, which is the second Saturday of the month and a government holiday. September 13 is a Sunday and the regular weekly holiday, while September 14 is a gazetted holiday for Vinayaka Chavithi.
The combination of the second Saturday, Sunday and the festival holiday effectively gives students three consecutive days away from regular classes.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations On Monday
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major festivals shaping the September holiday calendar, particularly in Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It begins on Monday, September 14.
In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, preparations for Ganesh Navratri are expected to intensify across villages, towns and cities, with organisers and local youth groups setting up Vinayaka mandaps in residential colonies and at major intersections.
In Hyderabad and Secunderabad, schools and government offices have traditionally observed a holiday on the day of Ganesh Nimajjanam, although such closures depend on official announcements.
Next, on September 18 (Friday), Maharashtra and some adjoining areas may observe a local holiday due to Gauri Pujan. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will observe school holiday on September 22 (Tuesday) due to Milad-un-Nabi. Schools in Maharashtra and several parts of central India may observe a holiday on September 25 (Friday) due to Anant Chaturdashi (Ganesh Visarjan).
