A sharp spike in electric vehicle registrations in Bengaluru has drawn attention to a growing shift in consumer preference, driven by a mix of policy changes and fuel-related concerns. The surge, recorded at the end of March, reflects how buyers are responding quickly to both rising costs of conventional fuels and evolving taxation rules around EVs.
On March 31 alone, more than 13,000 electric vehicles were registered across 11 RTO offices in Bengaluru, marking one of the highest single-day registration figures in the city. As per sources in RTO, a significant share of these registrations came from two-wheelers, indicating strong uptake in the more affordable EV segment.
This spike has also pushed up the city’s average daily EV registrations,
which have now increased by nearly 400 percent. Since January 2026, Bengaluru has been registering an average of 267 electric vehicles per day, a sharp jump compared to last year’s daily averages.
What Triggered The Sudden Surge?
One of the key reasons behind this last-day rush was the implementation of the Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Act from April 1. Buyers appear to have accelerated purchases to take advantage of earlier tax benefits before the new structure came into effect.
“Already we are paying hundred varieties of taxes. Now the fuel shortage has got us thinking as well. I was earlier contemplating whether or not to buy an EV. But went ahead and got one anyway. To avoid another tax, just got it registered on the last day of the financial year. It was a mad rush, but I am happy that I saved some money here” said Amogh Rajat, an accountant at a private firm in Bengaluru. He got his new electric car registered on March 31.
Under the revised system, EV cars priced up to Rs 10 lakh now attract a 5 percent lifetime tax on the vehicle’s cost. Vehicles priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 25 lakh are taxed at 8 percent, while those above Rs 25 lakh attract a 10 percent tax at the time of registration. Previously, most EVs, except high-end models above Rs 25 lakh, were exempt from road tax for life.
Fuel Prices, Global Factors Add Momentum
The surge in EV demand is also linked to rising petrol and diesel prices, along with concerns over fuel supply disruptions triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The uncertainty around fuel availability and cost has nudged more buyers towards electric mobility.
The momentum is not limited to Bengaluru. Across Karnataka, EV registrations have already crossed 50,000 this year. Between January and March, 54,379 new EVs were registered, compared to just over 35,000 during the same period last year, marking a growth of more than 40 percent.
March alone saw around 24,000 registrations statewide, with Bengaluru accounting for more than half of that number.
A Clear Shift In Buyer Behaviour
The combination of policy changes, rising fuel costs, and increasing awareness is clearly reshaping buying patterns in Bengaluru. The March 31 spike suggests that consumers are not just considering EVs as an alternative, but are actively timing their purchases around regulatory and cost advantages.
