The idea of a biopic on cricket star Virat Kohli has long fascinated fans, but filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has clarified that he has no plans to take up the challenge. During promotions for his upcoming film Nishaanchi, Kashyap said he would not want to direct a cinematic retelling of Kohli’s journey, despite his admiration for the cricketer. And his reason is valid too!
Anurag Kashyap on why he won’t make Virat Kohli’s biopic
In an interview with Filmygyan, Kashyap explained why he would not be the right choice for a Kohli biopic. “I don’t know if I would want to because he’s already a hero to many people, to many children. If I have to do a biopic, I would choose a difficult subject, a person’s life,” he said.
Although he ruled himself out, Kashyap
praised Kohli’s personality and character, noting, “He is a very beautiful man. I know him personally, and he is a very authentic human being. He is very emotional; he is an incredible person.”
On Nishaanchi
Kashyap, known for acclaimed films like Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Ugly (2013), and Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016), is now ready to present Nishaanchi. The film is set in Uttar Pradesh in the early 2000s and introduces Aaishvary Thackeray in his acting debut. Thackeray will play dual roles as brothers Babloo and Dabloo, whose clashing ideologies form the core of the narrative.
While comparisons to Gangs of Wasseypur are inevitable, Kashyap stressed that Nishaanchi is designed as a fresh story. He also addressed constant speculation about a possible GoW 3. “This film is Crime and Punishment. I wouldn’t call it an adaptation or interpretation, but influenced by it. I have always believed crime has consequences. I have never tried to glorify crime. My approach has been different in different films, and there is always a consequence. Nobody gets away scot-free in my films,” he said.
