When Martin Short Accidentally Cut Selena Gomez’s Wedding Cake

It’s been almost four months since Selena Gomez got married to the love of her life, Benny Blanco. The couple’s intimate wedding ceremony took place at the 70-acre Sea Crest Nursery estate in Santa Barbara, California, on September 27, 2025. Many notable industry figures, including Selena’s Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short, were in attendance. Recently, the 75-year-old actor spilt some tea about the very private affair.

During his appearance on the January 21 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, he shared details about a rather hilarious incident from the wedding reception of Selena and Benny, revealing how he almost ruined the newlyweds’ wedding cake. “The wedding was perfect, and it was beautiful,” he said, adding, “So everything

was perfect except the night of the reception.”

Martin told the audience that it was a big party, and that big tents had been erected for the guests to sit. He then shared that he was sitting with his Only Murders in the Building co-stars, including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd. There were 12 people in his tent, and their table had a small cake. “There was a wedding cake in our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back,” he explained.

After some time, Steve Martin got up to leave. Martin, who revealed that he might have had a cocktail, said that he was not ready to see his buddy off till he had a piece of cake. He shared, “I said, ‘Oh Steve, you can’t leave’ — I had a fork in my hand. ‘You can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake.’ And I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it on the other and then all the people in our group scream, ‘Marty!’ ”

He then realised that it was actually the wedding cake. During the episode, a photo of the heart-shaped wedding cake with “Just Married” was shown, which had two large slice marks. It also had a fork print, which Martin explained happened after he tried to fix it. “This was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented. And so I turned to Paul Rudd and said, ‘So, do we just leave?’ ” he added.

Martin revealed that they called the wedding coordinator, who then called the chef. “Then they did surgery, but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake, and it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done,” he mentioned. The screen then flashed a photo of the newlyweds with their wedding cake, and the repair job on it left the audience in stitches. While they decided not to tell Selena about the incident, Martin, who called the singer-actress “an extra child of mine”, shared that she already knew about.
