In today’s world of overwhelming skincare trends and endless product launches, a minimalist skincare routine is not just practical, it’s effective. According to Dr Sweety Darall Tomar, Dermatologist, Founder, Skinisma Aesthetics the key to healthy skin lies in consistency, not complexity.
A simple yet effective routine begins with understanding your skin type. As Dr Tomar explains, whether your skin is oily, dry, acne-prone, or sensitive, your products should address its basic needs without overloading it. At its core, every skincare routine should focus on three essential steps: cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection.
Dr. Sweety Darall Tomar recommends starting with a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, excess oil, and impurities without
stripping the skin’s protective barrier. This should be followed by a moisturiser suited to your skin type, which helps maintain hydration and strengthens the skin’s natural defences.
The final and most frequently overlooked step is sunscreen. As Dr Tomar emphasises, daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable. It protects the skin from premature ageing, pigmentation, and the long-term risk of skin cancer.
If you wish to include a targeted product, Dr Tomar advises choosing wisely. A Vitamin C serum in the morning can help enhance skin glow and reduce pigmentation. Meanwhile, retinol or chemical exfoliating acids at night may help address acne and fine lines — but only when used under the guidance of a dermatologist.
Minimalist skincare works because it reduces irritation, improves skin barrier cohesion, and allows the skin to heal and function naturally. As Tomar aptly sums up, healthy skin doesn’t need more products, it simply needs the right ones.
