Kriti Sanon has opened up about playing Ally in Cocktail 2. In a recent chat, she revealed that she was nervous about playing the character, as she is not as unhinged and carefree as Ally. However, Kriti is happy with the way the character has been presented on screen. She also reflected on how difficult it is to play a character one is not similar to, and revealed who she took inspiration from to play Ally.
Kriti Sanon told Filmfare, “I’m happy. I was actually quite nervous before getting into it. I’m not as unhinged a person as Ally is. She’s lived a different life. She’s just so non-judgmental, and I’m an overthinker by nature. I’m analytical and logical about things, whereas Ally is completely free-spirited, liberated and not bound by the
norms of society.”
The actress added, “She lives completely in the present, which is a rare quality. When she’s with people, she gives all the love that she has and makes everyone around her have fun. She caters to the philosophy – Jo jab tak hai, wo tab tak hai (enjoy it till it lasts). She’s not someone who has strings attached. For her, everything is transient.”
Kriti revealed that director (of both Cocktails) Homi Adajania inspired her character. She said, “He’s obviously not completely Ally, but I could draw some kind of Ally from him because he has a cool personality. He has lived and travelled a lot. His mindset is extremely liberated and free. He’s non-judgmental and has all those characteristics that Ally also has. I remember telling him, ‘I don’t think I’m cool as a person.’ There’s no preparation that you can do for coolness. It’s a state of mind.”
She added, “There are some people who just walk into a room, and they own it without trying. Ally is not someone who is trying to get attention. She’s just extremely unhinged. She’s someone who can just travel solo and make friends wherever she goes. She’s magnetic. Homi is also someone who has travelled a lot, who has had crazy incidents in his life and is just chill as a person. It took me a few days to get into her coolness and her chill persona.”
Reflecting on how difficult it is for an actor to play someone unlike them, she said, “That is what excites you as an actor. She’s so different from me in her way of thinking. Her moral compass is so different from mine. You need to dissociate yourself from the character and not judge the character that you’re playing. Try to find reasons why the person is doing what they’re doing and what their philosophy of life is. It’s interesting and exciting to play characters that will not react to situations the way I would and then find a new way to do things.”
Kriti Sanon also mentioned that if she could pick between the two female characters in Cocktail, the original film, she would choose Deepika Padukone’s Veronica. Meanwhile, Cocktail 2 is currently out in theatres and is performing decently at the box office. Besides Kriti Sanon, the film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Shahid Kapoor.
