In a bid to break stereotypes, nearly two dozen villages in Uttarakhand’s Chakrata region passed a mandate banning all expensive gifts, high-cost customs, liquor, and fast food in weddings. As per the
reports, the representatives said the step has been taken to curb the increasing social pressure around marriages.
As per a report by Times of India, a fine of Rs 1 lakh will be imposed by the gram panchayat on those who are found violating the norms. All village representatives in the Jaunsar Bawar area agreed to these terms.
Villages including Dau, Doha, Chutou, Bajau, Ghingo, and Kaitri are among those who implemented the new policy. One of the representatives told TOI that these customs were creating pressure and were becoming a competition.
As a part of this policy, weddings in this village will not include fast foods like noodles, momo, and all other types of snacks. The locals said the families are encouraged to serve Garhwali cuisine to the guests. The food is made from locally sourced ingredients like mandua and jhingora millet.
Instead of DJ music and alcohol, weddings at these villages will include traditional forms of entertainment like folk music.
