Bhubaneswar, Sep 12 (PTI) Vigilance sleuths in Odisha have arrested an excise superintendent and an assistant sub-inspector of police for corruption, officials said on Saturday.
The arrested officers were identified as Dhaneswar Barad, excise superintendent, Rourkela and Sujit Panigrahi, ASI of Khalikote police station in Ganjam district.
Acting on a tip-off, Vigilance sleuths intercepted a vehicle on Friday evening and seized Rs 5 lakh in cash from it.
The excise superintendent was allegedly sending the money through a salesman of a local liquor outlet for delivery to his residence, SP (Vigilance), Rourkela Division, Harekrushna Majhi said.
Barad could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the seized cash, he said.
Later, department officers
searched Barad’s properties, unearthing a double-storey building in Bhubaneswar, four plots in Bhubaneswar and Nayagarh, and deposits totalling Rs 33.97 lakh, the SP said.
Similarly, Vigilance sleuths arrested Panigrahi late on Friday evening while demanding and receiving Rs 15,000 from a person to help him in a case registered against him. Panigrahi is the investigating officer of the case, another officer said. PTI BBM BBM ACD
