Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday defended his distinctive public attire, saying his choice of a black blazer and white shirt carries a message and should not be seen as something reserved for the powerful.
Addressing a rally in Tiruchirappalli to thank the people after his victory in the April 23 Assembly elections, Vijay responded to comments about his clothing, which differs from the traditional white shirt and dhoti commonly worn by Tamil Nadu politicians, PTI reported.
Vijay Reveals Why He Prefers Black Attire
“Why? Shouldn’t we all wear a coat and a suit? Is it only for those in power, or is it only for dominant forces?” Vijay asked the gathering.
Explaining the symbolism behind his appearance, he said the black blazer and
white shirt reflected his commitment to transparency. The combination, he added, signified that Vijay would be “black and white” in everything. Without going into detail, he remarked that people also understood the significance of the colour black.
In Tamil Nadu’s political history, black has long been associated with the Dravidian movement and has symbolised resistance to oppression, self-respect and social justice.
Vijay also dismissed criticism from the DMK that he had remained silent on key issues. He said he does not feel compelled to respond to every allegation or speak at length. “In all (public) meetings, I have spoken only within a maximum of 20 minutes,” the report mentioned.
TVK-DMK Main Political Contest: Vijay
The TVK leader said many people had advised him to concentrate on governance and public welfare, assuring him that they would handle his critics. At the same time, he maintained that political competition in the state was primarily between TVK and the DMK, asserting that other parties lacked significant political space both before and after the elections.
The event, organised by TVK in Tiruchirappalli, began with the rendition of the Tamil Thai Vaazhthu amid an ongoing controversy that the Tamil invocation was accorded only the third place in the state functions attended by Governor Arlekar.
