A Bengaluru entrepreneur’s offer to financially support environmental activist Bittu Tabahi has sparked a conversation online about grassroots cleanliness drives, with users debating whether such efforts need more volunteers or greater public responsibility.
Entrepreneur Siddharth Dialani recently took to X to express his admiration for Bittu Tabahi’s work, particularly his efforts to clean polluted lakes, ponds and other water bodies. Saying that the initiatives had inspired him to do more for cleanliness in India, Dialani also sought help from social media users to get in touch with Bittu.
Dialani said he wanted to make a personal contribution towards some of Bittu’s activities and was willing to help raise funds from other like-minded people
for the scale of work being undertaken.
“I’m personally inspired by Bittu Tabahi. Looking at his work motivates me to do more for cleanliness in India. Can someone connect me to him? I would like to contribute in a small way by providing funds for some of his activities. For the scale at which he is working, I can raise funds for him from like-minded people,” Dialani wrote.
The post quickly drew reactions from users, with several welcoming the entrepreneur’s offer to support Bittu’s work.
One user highlighted the challenge of repeatedly cleaning spaces because of continued littering, writing, “He can clean the whole of India. And our uncivilised people will keep giving him work lifetime. It worries me to think that he can clean when are we gonna take effort to keep it that way?”
Another user appreciated Dialani’s decision to step forward, saying, “At last someone with resources wants to help him. Otherwise our businessmen want to give grants to Harvard only.”
Some users also pointed out that those wanting to support Bittu could contribute directly through the channels he shares online. “In his instagram page he keeps posting his UPI n QR. Go ahead and contribute,” said a third user.
For another commenter, contributing financially was a goal for the future despite not having a job at present. “I am in as well but i am unemployed, first thing i will do after receiving salary from any job is contribute to his cleanliness drives!” said a fourth.
The conversation also attracted people involved in similar grassroots initiatives. One user from Pune reached out to Dialani, writing, “Hi Siddharth, We also run a cleanup pune group in pune and trying to gather more volunteers and make our city clean and beautiful. Currently looking for solutions to maintain the cleanliness after cleanups. It would be really good to be in touch with you.”
Another user shifted the focus from funding to individual responsibility and urged people to participate directly in maintaining their surroundings. “We all can contribute by picking up broom and initiate cleanliness around us and inspire others to maintain hygiene round the clock,” the user said.
