A young man from a small village in Haryana who left home with hopes of earning abroad to support his ailing father died under suspicious circumstances in Italy, leaving his family devastated and struggling to bring his body back.
Gagandeep, a resident of Ramkhedi village in Bilaspur town of Yamunanagar district, had travelled to Italy on April 3, 2023. He was seen off at Delhi airport by his brother-in-law Amanpreet Kaur and other family members, all carrying dreams of a better future. Nearly three years later, on February 4, 2026, the family received the shocking news of his death, and they have not yet received any assurance about the return of his body to the village for last rites.
According to the family, Gagandeep had gone abroad not for
personal aspirations but to earn money for the treatment of his father, Jagjit Singh, who has been bedridden for the past 18 years and has also lost his memory. The family’s financial condition was extremely weak, and as the eldest of two siblings, Gagandeep had taken on the responsibility of supporting the household. He had hoped that by working hard in Italy, he would be able to arrange proper medical care for his father.
However, the family has alleged that the agent who facilitated his travel took a large amount of money but failed to provide him with stable employment after he reached Italy. They claim that Gagandeep was not paid for the work he did, and as his savings ran out, his situation worsened. In an attempt to escape the agent’s control, he reportedly moved from city to city in search of work and shelter but could not find a steady job or place to stay. Eventually, he was forced to live in a camp.
Family members say the constant stress, isolation and deteriorating living conditions pushed him into deep depression. They believe he eventually lost his life under these circumstances. Now, they say they do not even have the financial means to bring his body back to India.
The atmosphere at his home in Ramkhedi is one of overwhelming grief. His mother is inconsolable, and his father, in a fragile state, repeatedly says that his son had gone abroad only to earn for his treatment and never returned.
Seeking assistance, the bereaved family has approached Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, who has assured them of help in bringing Gagandeep’s body back home.
