Indian Railways Launches Online Excess Luggage Booking: What Are The New Rules And How To Book?

Tired of standing in long queues at the parcel office just because your bags are a few kilos over the limit? Indian Railways is changing that experience with a new online excess luggage booking facility that allows eligible passengers to declare, pay for and manage extra baggage digitally while planning their journey.

The new service, launched on July 31, is aimed at making train travel more convenient by integrating excess luggage booking with the online ticketing process. Instead of making a separate visit to the parcel office, passengers can now complete the process online before their journey begins.

Indian Railways New Luggage Rules

Passengers with confirmed reserved tickets can now declare and pay for excess personal luggage online while booking or managing their train tickets,

eliminating the need to visit a parcel office.

Here are the Indian Railways new luggage rules (as per the online excess luggage booking facility launched from July 31, 2026):

Eligibility: The facility is available only for certain reserved classes. Passengers in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, First Class, Sleeper Class and Second Class can avail of it. AC 3-Tier, AC 3 Economy and AC Chair Car are excluded because their maximum permissible luggage limit is the same as their free allowance.

Excess luggage charges: If your baggage exceeds the free allowance but is within the maximum permissible limit, you’ll need to pay the prescribed excess luggage charges. The minimum charge is ₹30, calculated in 10 kg slabs, with a minimum chargeable distance of 50 km.

Size restrictions: Luggage dimensions must comply with Railway rules. Standard trunks, suitcases and boxes up to 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm are generally allowed, while AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car passengers must adhere to a smaller size limit of 55 cm × 45 cm × 22.5 cm.

Passengers carrying more than the permitted limit without declaring and booking it may face penalties under Railway luggage rules.

How Much Luggage Can You Carry Free In Indian Railways?

• AC First Class: 70 kg free (maximum 150 kg with extra charges)
• First Class/AC 2-Tier: 50 kg free (maximum 100 kg)
• Sleeper Class: 40 kg free (maximum 80 kg)
• Second Class: 35 kg free (maximum 70 kg)
• AC 3-Tier/AC Chair Car: 40 kg free (maximum 40 kg)

How to Book Excess Luggage Online?

1. Visit the Indian Railways parcel portal (parcel.indianrail.gov.in) or use the facility while booking on IRCTC.
2. Enter journey details origin, destination, train number and luggage specifications.
3. The system shows estimated charges, class-wise limits, restricted items and penalty rules.
4. Submit the online application and take a printout of the e-forwarding note.
5. Present your luggage at the originating station’s parcel office for final weighing and payment.
6. Collect the Railway Receipt (RR). This document is required to claim your luggage at the destination.

You can track your luggage in real time using the Track & Trace service and will receive an SMS when it arrives at the destination station
