Jannik Sinner concluded a challenging season in the best way possible on Sunday, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5, to retain his ATP Finals title in front of enthusiastic fans in Turin.
Italian Sinner thrilled the crowd by winning the highly anticipated championship match, adding this prestigious year-ending tournament to his victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this season.
The 24-year-old also rebounded from a three-month suspension that significantly affected his season, despite the World Anti-Doping Agency accepting that he was accidentally contaminated with the banned substance clostebol last year.
Win After Win
Sinner has now won 31 consecutive matches on indoor hard courts, a streak that dates back to the 2023
championship match at Turin’s Inalpi Arena, which he lost to Novak Djokovic. Four more indoor wins would match Djokovic’s tally set between 2012 and 2015—the second-highest in the Open era but still behind John McEnroe’s record of 47.
He hasn’t dropped a set at the Finals since losing that final to Djokovic two years ago and was dominant throughout the week in northern Italy.
Unlike Sinner, Alcaraz now heads into the Davis Cup after an extraordinary individual season in which he won eight tournaments and increased his Grand Slam tally to six.
Sinner had the upper hand over Alcaraz during the season, winning four of their six match-ups, all of which were at top-level tournaments, and securing the year-end world number one spot.
How Sinner Beat Alcaraz?
While both Sinner and Alcaraz smoothly advanced to the final, the championship game was a tough contest, with each player strong on serve until an exciting tie-break at the end of the first set. Sinner took the lead with a brilliant lob setting up set point, followed by a powerful serve that Alcaraz could only send wide.
However, Sinner immediately gave Alcaraz the advantage in the second set with two double-faults, leading to a break of serve at the start. Sinner, who hadn’t dropped a service game throughout the tournament, broke back in game six, energizing the crowd.
Sinner collapsed in joy when Alcaraz sent a backhand wide on the first championship point, then celebrated with his family in the stands amid the crowd’s cheers.
