Deepika Padukone’s exit from two major projects this year- Spirit and Kalki 2, allegedly over an 8-hour shift demand, sparked a debate around reasonable working hours in the film industry. Several reports
suggested that after embracing motherhood, she asked for an 8-hour workday, which reportedly didn’t go down well with the makers. Amid the debate over work hours, an old video of her husband, actor Ranveer Singh, talking about working beyond 8-hour shifts is going viral. The throwback interview, originally from 3 years ago, shows Ranveer saying he doesn’t mind stretching an 8-hour shift to 10-12 hours if that means finishing the work properly.
When Ranveer Singh Said He Doesn’t Mind Shooting Beyond 8 Hours To Complete Work
In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama from 2022, Ranveer Singh said that brands put their trust in him as he delivers on his promise. He said he is fine extending an 8-hour shift to 10–12 hours and doesn’t mind putting in extra time if it means the work gets done properly. He said that other artists sometimes complain since they also have to work longer hours, but he believes that if the work can’t be completed in 8 hours, a little extra effort is fine.

“A lot of times people complain…other artists and their management complain ki ‘Yaar tu sabko bigaad raha hai.’ Sab log bolte hain ‘8 ghanta ki shift mein tu 10-12 ghanta kabhi shooting karta hai. Fir hum log ko bhi karna padta hai.’ (A lot of times, people complain…other artists and their management say, ‘You’re messing things up for everyone.’ Everyone says, ‘You sometimes shoot 10–12 hours in an 8-hour shift, so we also have to do it’),” said Ranveer.
“But ab 8 ghanta mein wo cheez jo hum chahte hain, wo nahi bani toh theek hai na. Aap karlo thodi si zyada shooting. I’m not that kind of partner who sees it as a transaction. (But if what we want isn’t achieved in 8 hours, then it’s fine. You can do a little extra shooting),” said Ranveer.
Ranveer Singh is currently basking in the success of his recently released film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. Last month, at the trailer launch event of the film, Aditya Dhar revealed that the entire team, including actors, worked for 16-18 hours continuously for 1.5 years. Despite the hectic shoot schedule, he said that not once did anyone complain about the workload.
“We have worked 16-18 hours continuously for 1.5 years. Yet, not once did anyone complain about the workload. Everybody has given their 100 per cent, including Ranveer Singh,” he said.
Deepika Padukone Defends 8-Hour Shift Demand
Last month, Deepika interacted with Harper’s Bazaar when she talked about how motherhood has changed her approach towards work. The actress mentioned that we have normalised overworking and urged everyone not to confuse “burnout for commitment”.
“We’ve normalised overworking. We mistake burnout for commitment. Eight hours of work a day is enough for the human body and mind. Only when you’re healthy can you give your best. Bringing a burnt-out person back into the system helps no one. In my own office, we work eight hours a day, Monday to Friday. We have maternity and paternity policies. We should normalise bringing children to work,” the actress said.
