TVK govt's maiden Budget to be presented on Aug 5

Chennai, Jul 21 (PTI) The TVK government will present its maiden full Budget for 2026-27 on August 5 and Agriculture Budget the following day, Tamil Nadu Speaker J C D Prabhakar informed on Tuesday.

Finance Minister N Marie Wilson will present his first General Budget to the House, while Agriculture Minister R Vinoth will present the Agricultue Budget on August 6.

Following the Budget presentation, the Business Advisory Committee will meet on August 5 to determine the duration of the Assembly session and the scheduling of debates, including discussions on demand for grants, the Speaker told reporters at the Secretariat.

He exuded the hope that the session will be constructive and that there would be healthy debates.

Assembly proceedings will be telecast live.

Ahead of the Budget, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, heading the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, held a series of meetings with department heads, senior officials and his Cabinet colleagues and discussed a roadmap to implement the TVK poll promises.

It may be noted that Vijay had accused the previous DMK regime of siphoning various government departments in the name of “party funds” – a charge denied by the opposition party. He had vowed to recover the money and have it returned to the Treasury.

“If administrative efficiency means committing one act of corruption after another and then escaping accountability, this government will never indulge in such corrupt administrative practices. The money looted in Tasmac in the name of party funds is now being brought back to the government Treasury,” Vijay had said, while replying to the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the House, recently.

The state government had released a “White Paper” on the state’s fiscal management, revealing a severe financial crisis, with the debt reaching Rs 10 lakh crore and total liabilities touching Rs 13.18 lakh crore “driven by revenue collapse.” Despite the financial crisis, the TVK administration has announced that it will not halt welfare programmes. The Budget is expected to address the TVK poll assurances on monthly Rs 2,500 payout for homemakers, and allowances for youth, among other things.

The government has already announced the one-gram gold ring scheme for newborns in the state.

The separate Agriculture Budget is likely to outline targeted subsidies and develoment inititives, according to sources. PTI JSP JSP KH
