When Shilpa Shinde left Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain nine years ago, she became the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons. While the actress levelled several allegations against the makers of the hit show, the producers also accused her of being unprofessional. Now that Shilpa is all set to reprise her role of Angoori Bhabhi in the show’s season 2, she has opened up about her rift with the makers and why she left the show in 2016.
In a recent interview, Shilpa recalled what had happened and told Mid-Day, “At that time, every show except ours had flopped. So, these people wanted to exert control on our show. They tried to gain publicity for the channel through me. They sent me to a TV award ceremony in my character’s outfit! Whether from the channel or other
authorities, the bottomline was to control me.”
“Even after giving everything to the show for a year, I was completely sidelined. A lot of misunderstandings were created. I took this experience as a lesson, it showed me the real [nature] of people. I didn’t have any complaints with my co-stars. There were people claiming that I had left Bhabiji… for another show. No one knew the reality,” the actress added.
What Happened 9 Years Ago?
Shilpa Shinde was the original Angoori Bhabhi when the show was launched in 2015. She quickly became popular for her comic timing and catchphrases. However, she exited the show abruptly in March 2016, less than a year after it began.
Following her exit from the show, Shilpa Shinde publicly accused the makers of subjecting her to mental harassment. She alleged that the work environment was stressful and that she was treated unfairly compared to other actors on the show. She also accused producer, Sanjay Kohli, of sexual harassment and his wife, Benaifer Kohli, of threats.
One of her main allegations involved a restrictive contract, which she claimed prevented her from taking up other work. Shilpa stated that the producers tried to impose exclusivity clauses and controlled her professional choices, which she found unreasonable and oppressive.
Shilpa also alleged favouritism on set, claiming that certain co-actors received better facilities, styling support and treatment.
In response, the producers denied her claims and sent her legal notices, accusing her of breaching contract terms and being unprofessional. Vikas Gupta, who was then the programming head of &TV, said Shilpa threw her weight around on the show.
