Concerns over the safety of women returning from night shifts in Bengaluru have resurfaced after a young doctor was allegedly harassed while heading back home late at night. The incident, which took place in the AGB Layout area of Chikkabanavara, was captured on a CCTV camera, helping the police swiftly identify and arrest the accused.
According to the police, the incident occurred on 17 December at around 12.45 am. The doctor, who works at a private hospital on Hesaraghatta Road, was returning to her paying guest accommodation after completing her night duty. As she reached near the PG gate, a man riding a motorcycle stopped beside her and asked for directions to the bus stand.
Police said that after the doctor responded to the question, the man’s
behaviour changed. On the pretext of continuing the conversation, he allegedly stopped his bike and began misbehaving with her. Shocked by the incident, the doctor raised an alarm and screamed for help.
Hearing her screams, the accused panicked and fled the spot on his motorcycle. However, the entire sequence of events was recorded by a CCTV camera installed near the PG gate. The footage clearly showed the movement of the bike, the interaction with the doctor, and the accused fleeing the scene.
Based on the CCTV visuals, the doctor filed a complaint at the Soladevanahalli police station. Taking the matter seriously, the police examined the footage and identified the accused as Vinod. He was later arrested and interrogated in connection with the case.
According to police sources, further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused was involved in similar incidents or was targeting women while riding alone at night. Officials said the accused is likely to face serious charges related to women’s safety.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by women, particularly those working night shifts such as doctors and other service professionals. Police officials stated that the swift arrest was intended to reassure women and deter similar offences.
Authorities have also stressed the importance of installing CCTV cameras in public areas and strengthening night patrolling to improve safety. Police said the doctor’s prompt response and the presence of CCTV cameras played a crucial role in preventing further harm and ensuring quick action.
