Adnan Sami’s drastic weight loss has been discussed for years, but behind the physical transformation was a frightening medical warning and a promise he made to his father. The singer has recalled being told by a doctor that his weight had put his life at serious risk and that he could have just six months to live.
At his heaviest, Sami weighed around 230 kg and had reached a point where his mobility and health were severely affected. Speaking to Zoom, he said the warning was difficult enough to process, but hearing it with his father sitting next to him made the moment far more painful.
‘The Doctor Said It In Front Of My Father’
Sami admitted that his immediate reaction was frustration with the doctor for delivering the prognosis in his father’s
presence.
“It was a huge jolt. What made it even worse was that my father was sitting next to me when the doctor said it. I was more upset that he said it in front of my father because your loved ones react far more emotionally than you do. They love you and care for you,” he said.
He initially attempted to brush aside the seriousness of what they had heard. Sami told his father that the doctor was simply being “overdramatic”, but his father refused to accept that explanation.
Recalling their conversation, the singer said his father responded, “Really? Do you really think so? I can see it myself. He’s not talking nonsense. He’s right.”
It was his father’s emotional reaction, rather than the prognosis alone, that finally made Sami commit to changing his lifestyle.
“My father became so emotional that I promised him, ‘I’ll fix it. I’ll fix this.’ That promise set everything in motion. It was a Herculean task, and I never imagined I’d end up losing so much weight,” he said.
Adnan Sami Denies Weight-Loss Surgery Claims
As Sami began losing weight, his transformation also prompted speculation that he had undergone surgery. The singer has once again rejected those claims.
“A lot of people said that. I was like, ‘Really?’ Whenever you achieve something, there will always be naysayers. Usually, they’re the people who are envious and try to belittle your efforts,” he said.
Addressing claims about undergoing multiple procedures, Sami added, “They’ll say, ‘Oh, he had a lot of surgeries.’ It’s nonsense.”
He maintains that his weight loss came through lifestyle changes, diet and exercise rather than bariatric surgery.
‘I Worked Like Hell’
Sami also spoke about the less visible side of losing such a significant amount of weight. Progress was not consistent, and there were weeks when extensive effort produced only a small change on the weighing scale.
“I worked like hell. There were many times when I was working out, starving myself, depriving myself of so much, and after a whole week of intense effort, I’d realise I’d lost only half a kilo,” he recalled.
The slow progress could be frustrating, particularly after days of sticking to a demanding routine.
“You think, ‘All that effort for this?’ It’s incredibly disheartening. But then you remind yourself that sometimes you hit a plateau. You have to keep going. It takes a lot of determination and willpower,” Sami said.
That made speculation about surgery particularly frustrating for him because, he felt, it reduced months of effort to an easy explanation.
“And then, of course, there are people who suddenly dismiss it or belittle everything you’ve achieved,” he added.
How Adnan Sami Lost Around 120 Kg
Sami’s weight had reportedly climbed to approximately 230 kg at his heaviest. His health and mobility were badly affected, and he had become largely bedridden.
Following the medical warning, he began a supervised programme involving major changes to his eating habits and physical activity. His diet was reportedly centred around high-protein and low-carbohydrate foods, accompanied by exercise and broader lifestyle changes.
Over time, Sami reportedly shed around 120 kg. He has consistently maintained that the transformation was achieved without bariatric surgery.
His experience has continued to attract attention because of the scale of the change. For Sami, however, the starting point was not about appearance. It came from confronting the potential consequences of his weight and seeing what the doctor’s warning did to his father.
Adnan Sami’s Three-Decade Music Career
Away from conversations surrounding his transformation, Sami has spent more than three decades working as a singer, composer and musician.
He is known for songs including Lift Karadey, Kabhi To Nazar Milao, Tera Chehra, Sun Zara and Bhar Do Jholi Meri. His distinctive voice and piano skills helped him build a successful career across independent music and Hindi cinema.
Born in London, Sami was granted Indian citizenship in 2016. Four years later, in 2020, he received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, for his contribution to the arts.
