Vaibhav Sooryavanshi didn’t have a great time at the Arun Jaitley Stadium nets on Friday (September 11) as the returning Jasprit Bumrah tested him to the T ahead of the first India-Afghanistan T20I in the national capital.
According to PTI, Sooryavanshi played and missed several deliveries from pacers throughout the session, but he was particularly troubled by Bumrah. The left-hander is said to have missed the first two deliveries, getting beaten by the pace on both occasions, before only just about digging out a yorker on the third.
Sooryavanshi knicked the fourth ball. He finally got a fuller one in the arc and got it away for a good hit down the ground. The report said that Sooryavanshi also struggled in catching practice.
This was a crucial
net session for Sooryavanshi, who’s coming fresh off the Duleep Trophy final, a red-ball game. He only has a couple of days to get back into the white-ball, T20 mode.
That makes it quite possible that the team drops him for the match, bringing back Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order.
Ajinkya Rahane’s advice to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Earlier in the day, former India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane also backed the Samson-Abhishek opening partnership, saying Sooryavanshi needed to wait for his chance again. But he also backed the youngster to continue playing the way he does.
“I feel right now he should play his own game,” he said on his YouTube channel. “The game that got him into the England team — he should back that same game. It’s very early for him to make changes in his early career in international cricket. So for now, he doesn’t need to think too much. You should leave him open. As you play for a year or two, your game will slowly change. But for now, the game that helped him get here — I think he should play that same game. It will be important for him to keep himself balanced. Along with cricket skills, off the field, as a player, maintaining balance is very important. So I think that will be a challenge for him,” he added.
