Sanju Samson delivered a commanding statement at the Wankhede, producing a match-defining century to power Chennai Super Kings to a thumping win over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 on April 22.
Opening the innings under pressure, Sanju Samson anchored the effort with a superb unbeaten 101 off 54 balls, an innings that blended restraint with calculated aggression. With wickets falling regularly at the other end, Samson ensured stability, picking his moments to accelerate and finishing with 10 fours and eight sixes as CSK posted a daunting 207/6.
Mumbai Indians, in response, unravelled almost immediately. A disastrous start saw them slump to 11/3 within the first three overs, leaving their middle order with too much to do. Akeal Hosein capitalised on the early
pressure, producing a superb spell of 4/17 that broke the backbone of the chase. His variations and control proved too much for Mumbai’s batters, who struggled to build any meaningful momentum.
There was a brief attempt at resistance from Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, who added 73 runs for the fourth wicket. However, the partnership lacked urgency, with the required rate climbing steadily out of reach. Suryakumar’s 35 off 30 balls appeared laboured, while Tilak’s 37 ended when he dragged one back onto his stumps—handing Hosein his third wicket. The spinner soon added Suryakumar as well, effectively extinguishing Mumbai’s hopes.
From there, the collapse was swift. Noor Ahmad struck in quick succession, removing Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford to leave Mumbai reeling. The innings eventually folded for just 104 in 19 overs, marking their heaviest defeat in IPL history.
Earlier, CSK’s innings had not been entirely smooth. Ruturaj Gaikwad provided early impetus but fell after a promising start, while Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube were unable to convert their opportunities. Dewald Brevis chipped in with a brisk cameo, but it was Samson who held the innings together, pacing it expertly and ensuring a strong finish with a flurry of boundaries in the final over.
Interestingly, despite being the away side, CSK appeared to enjoy overwhelming crowd support, with the Wankhede atmosphere resembling a home game. The team responded with a complete performance, delivering with both bat and ball even in the absence of MS Dhoni.
The night also carried emotional weight, as CSK players wore black armbands in tribute to the late mother of Mukesh Choudhary. The emphatic victory, built on Samson’s brilliance and a clinical bowling display, served as a fitting response on a significant evening for the franchise.
