Iran And Oman May Charge Ships Passing Through Hormuz Under Ceasefire Deal: Report

The Tehran-Washington ceasefire plan allows Iran and Oman to charge fees to ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, officials familiar with the matter told the Associated Press. The Strait of Hormuz- 21 miles wide at its narrowest, carrying roughly a fifth of the world’s traded crude daily- is no longer a free international waterway if the report holds.

What Iran Has Said Iran’s position on Hormuz has been consistent as the country’s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi said ships could pass through the strait “via coordination with Iran’s armed forces.” Iran’s ten-point plan, which it says Washington has accepted as the basis for upcoming negotiations, calls explicitly for “controlled passage through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with Iran’s armed forces”-

a provision the plan notes grants Iran “a unique economic and geopolitical position.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s ceasefire statement made no mention of fees or Iranian coordination as he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE!”

How Markets Have Reacted
Brent crude crashed 20% on Tuesday, from a session high of $117.63 to $91.05- its biggest single-day collapse since Covid- as traders unwound the war premium built over forty days of conflict. Talks between the US and Iran begin in Islamabad on April 10. Iran arrives with its ten-point plan intact, which beyond Hormuz fees demands full US military withdrawal from the region, sanctions relief, war reparations and all terms enshrined in a binding UN Security Council resolution. The two sides have two weeks to close a deal.
