Kartik Sharma entered his name in the record books on Friday (May 15) by breaking the record for scoring the most runs by an uncapped player in an IPL season for Chennai Super Kings.

20-year-old Kartik, who represents Rajasthan in domestic cricket, is playing in the IPL for the first time this year, and during his team’s 12th league match of IPL 2026, he scored 71 runs from 42 balls. The 71-run knock by Kartik for CSK against Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday helped him extend his tally of runs to 244 in nine matches of IPL 2026.
He now tops the list of uncapped batters with the most runs in an IPL season for Chennai Super Kings.
The previous record of scoring most
runs in a season by an uncapped batter for CSK was held by Ayush Mhatre. Mhatre played seven matches for CSK in IPL 2025 and scored 240 runs in those seven matches.

In the ongoing 2026 edition of the IPL, Kartik, who was signed for Rs 14.20 crore by CSK in the IPL 2026 auction, has scored two half-centuries and hammered 18 fours and 14 sixes so far.
The record of scoring most runs in an IPL season by uncapped player is in name of Yashasvi Jaiswal. In the 2023 edition of the IPL, Jaiswal played 14 matches for Rajasthan Royals under Sanju Samson’s leadership and scored 625 runs.

In the 2021 edition of the IPL, Ruturaj Gaikwad amassed a total of 635 runs in 16 matches for Chennai Super Kings. At the start of that season (in March), he was an uncapped player, but before the season ended (in October), he became an Indian batter. Prior to making his India debut that season, he scored 196 runs in 7 matches for the MS Dhoni-led side, and after becoming an India player (on July 28, 2021), he scored 439 runs in nine innings.
