Thane, Jul 25 (PTI) A 61-year-old man was cheated of Rs 5 lakh by cyber criminals who promised to assist him in applying for a pension card, a Thane police official said on Saturday.
The victim, a resident of Pachpakhadi area of Naupada, had filled in his details on a website found via a Google search on June 10 to get a pension card, the Naupada police station official said.
“Shortly after that, a man contacted the victim, got him to dial certain numbers and took control of his device. The accused then took out Rs 5 lakh from his account through an online transaction,” the official said.
When Rode realized something was amiss and disconnected the call to abort the process, another accused called him back and pressured him to continue the procedure
to facilitate further unauthorized withdrawals, the official said.
A case has been registered against unidentified persons under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology for cheating, identity theft, impersonation and other offences, he said.
Efforts are on to trace the digital footprint, bank account details, and phone numbers involved in the racket. No arrests have been made as yet, the official added. PTI COR BNM
