Widely regarded as Thalapathy Vijay’s last film, Jana Nayagan, which was scheduled to release on January 9, has been officially postponed in India. The film’s makers, KVN Productions, announced the film’s delay, citing “unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”
By then, bookings were already open and thousands of tickets had been sold worldwide. In the wake of the postponement, the makers and ticketing platforms have initiated a refund process, reportedly marking one of the largest ticket refunds in India.
Jana Nayagan to Issue India’s Largest Ticket Refund
Jana Nayagan was scheduled to hit the big screen on the festive weekend of Pongal. However, on January 7 evening, the makers announced that the film was being postponed indefinitely.
The
film is yet to receive clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The certification delay forced the makers to abruptly postpone the release just two days before the scheduled date. The film’s makers and Vijay moved the Madras High Court over the non-issuance.
As per industry trackers, ticketing platform BookMyShow began the large-scale process of refunding over 4.5 lakh tickets following the postponement announcement. This move has been dubbed the largest refund in Indian cinema history. Trade analysts estimate that refunds worth around Rs 1 crore have already been issued in India alone, with the global figure expected to be significantly higher.
Madras HC orders CBFC to Clear Jana Nayagan For Release
On Friday, January 9, the Madras High Court instructed the CBFC to grant Jana Nayagan a U/A 16+ certificate and clear it for release. However, the certification process is yet to be completed, with reports suggesting that the CBFC plans to appeal the High Court judgment.
Jana Nayagan has been one of the most eagerly awaited films, as it is expected to be Vijay’s final release before he formally enters politics. The actor-turned-politician is set to contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections this year under his party, TVK. Amid the delay, party members and supporters have alleged that the film’s postponed release is a political ploy to ‘stall his fame’.
Directed by H Vinoth, alongside Thalapathy Vijay stars Prakash Raj, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju, among others. The makers will soon release a new date once they get clearance from the CBFC.
