Shahid Kapoor doesn’t shy away from the fact that he loves a good workout and staying in shape, whether the role demands it or not. As the actor prepares for the release of his new film, O Romeo, where he plays a tattoo-covered anti-hero, he has once again had to maintain a hero’s physique.
In a recent interview with The Indian Express, the 44-year-old got candid about his diet and workout that help him to stay fighting fit. Shahid Kapoor has been a vegetarian for many years and has been very vocal about following a plant-based diet. In previous interviews, he has spoken about how reading Brian Hines’ book Life is Fair made him realise that he didn’t want animals to suffer for his food. This switch has also improved his energy levels and made him feel
more vibrant.

Shahid Kapoor on his workout and diet
Ask the father of two about his daily workout, and he says, “For me, fitness is about consistency rather than intensity.”
He goes on to add, “My routine usually includes a mix of functional training, strength work, and mobility exercises to keep me agile and injury-free. I prefer training in the morning, which gives me a good head start to the day. I also try to add some cardio or a sport whenever possible just to keep things interesting.”
For Shahid Kapoor, working out is more about “maintaining a balanced routine that supports my energy, my work, and my overall well-being” than just looking good.
For Shahid Kapoor, it is not just about the gym but also eating a well-balanced diet. Not one to push himself to extremes for the sake of being fit, he says, “I try to eat clean and stay disciplined, but I am not extreme about it. I have been a vegetarian, so my meals naturally stay balanced — plenty of greens, vegetables, and pulses. I avoid heavy, unhealthy foods and don’t eat late at night, as it really affects my energy.”

The actor goes on to add, “Instead of weighing everything I eat, I prefer smaller, frequent meals that keep me feeling light and steady. That said, I am human — I enjoy comfort food once in a while, especially simple home-cooked meals. For me, it is about mindful eating rather than strict restriction.”
Shahid Kapoor on getting a good night’s sleep
Shahid Kapoor, who is married to entrepreneur Mira Kapoor, shares that “Sleep is honestly one of the most underrated parts of staying balanced.”
For the actor, having a restful sleep that can energise him is very important. He says, “I try to get about six hours on most days, though it really depends on my shoot schedule. When I’m working back-to-back, I get a little less done, but I always make it a point to catch up whenever I can. Good rest makes a huge difference in how you show up — not just physically, but mentally, too.”
Ask the actor about his morning routine, and he shares that he prefers things to be simple. Shahid Kapoor says, “I like to keep my mornings simple and grounded. I usually start with a short breathing exercise — it wakes up my system and helps me ease into the day. If I’m working, I train early in the morning on an empty stomach, so I ensure to wake up at least three-and-a-half hours before I have to be on set. That gives me enough time to work out, get ready, and spend a few quiet moments with my family.
