Assam is going through some troubling times due to the ongoing floods. Today, the death toll rose to 68 after two more people lost their lives. However, more than 5.24 lakh people remain affected across five districts, according to an official bulletin. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has said that over 5,24,700 people have been impacted all over Assam.
Amid this, Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar has spoken up, urging citizens to support Assam during the floods. She also recalled the cumulative relief efforts in Punjab last year. Bhumi even shared pictures of flood-hit areas of Assam.
In her Instagram video, Bhumi Pednekar said, “There have been a lot of bad floods in Assam. The situation is so bad that 7.5 lakh people have been evacuated.
More than 40 people have died, and the death toll is increasing. Entire villages have been washed away, and animals have been washed away. Whatever they had, everything is finished. Not many people are talking about it, but I have complete faith.”
She continued, “Like last year, the whole country was standing. Punjab, Jammu, Bihar, Maharashtra. We showed a sense of community service. You sent so many donated supplies; that time has come again. This time, Assam needs us. Assam needs a lot of supplies. Food, mattresses, sanitation, and evacuation. If you see the visuals, your heart will break. It is very, very heartbreaking, and Assam really needs our support. I request everyone to donate as much as possible. And spread this message a little.”
In another video also, Bhumi asked people to help with the relief of Assam people who are affected by floods. She wrote in her caption: “We’ve seen the power of the algorithm. Assam and actually even parts of Gujarat are submerged. The floods have caused extreme devastation. They need our help! Link in Bio.”
Meanwhile, Bhumi’s post was noticed by the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma (BJP). The CM’s office expressed gratitude to Bhumi in the comments section saying, “Thank you, Bhumi, for standing with Assam in this difficult time. Your support means a great deal to every affected family.”
According to the ASDMA, authorities are running 354 relief camps and relief distribution centres in four districts, where 37,724 displaced people are being sheltered. Currently, floodwaters have submerged 763 villages across the state, while damage has been reported over 48,742.09 hectares of agricultural land.
