A 38-year-old woman died by suicide at her residence in Maharashtra’s Thane district after allegedly learning that her bank account had been used in several cyber fraud cases registered across the country, police said on Thursday.
The woman was identified as Devika Armugam Pandaram, who lived in Sairam Society in Dombivli (East).
The case came to light after officials from the Churu Cyber Cell police station in Rajasthan visited Pandaram’s residence on August 8. Police said the officials served her a notice asking her to appear for questioning in connection with a case registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Her Bank of Maharashtra account was allegedly used to facilitate an online fraud, they said.
Pandaram subsequently approached the Cyber Crime Department at the Thane Police Commissionerate to seek clarification. Officials there told her that she was named in multiple cyber fraud cases registered in different states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, police said.
According to her relatives, Pandaram became panic-stricken after learning that she could have to travel to different states to appear before the police for questioning. At around 4 pm on Tuesday, she allegedly used a sharp blade to cut her wrist and throat, police said.
Her relatives took her to a nearby private hospital, from where she was referred to the municipal-run Shastri Nagar Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared her brought dead, police said.
An accidental death case has been registered, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
