Mumbai’s Most Iconic Address Just Climbed 8 Spots On The World’s 50 Best Hotels List

For every traveller who makes it to Mumbai, there is a postcard-perfect experience that inevitably makes it to their bucket list – watching the Gateway of India framed against the sea, and right beside it, the domed silhouette of the Taj Mahal Palace. For over a century, that image has barely changed, and we are grateful for it.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels released its 2026 list this week, and the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai secured the 30th spot, climbing eight places from last year’s 38th rank. The list was unveiled at an awards ceremony in Paris, the first time the event has been held outside the UK, at Les Salles du Carrousel.

Long before India became synonymous with luxury hospitality on the global stage, one man had a vision – to give the country

a hotel that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the grandest in the world. That man was Jamsetji Tata, the legendary industrialist and founder of the Tata Group. The crown jewel of his vision? The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, which opened its doors in 1903.

Interestingly, the Taj predates the very landmark it now stands beside. The Gateway of India was completed in 1924; the hotel came first. Over the decades, it has hosted royalty, dignitaries, and a long list of high-profile guests, becoming almost inseparable from Mumbai’s Colaba skyline. The World’s 50 Best Hotels describes it as “a Mumbai icon” that has been “hailed for its grandeur, exemplary design and hospitality.”

The hotel’s design borrows from Indian, Moorish, Oriental and Renaissance influences featuring intricate latticework, marble-floored lobbies, onyx-columned corridors and grand staircases with wrought-iron balustrades. A long archival corridor inside doubles as a museum, tracing the hotel’s own history. The 285 rooms and suites of the Heritage Wing carry hand-knotted carpets, silk drapes, four-poster beds and crystal chandeliers, while the newer Tower Wing leans modern, with muted tones and floor-to-ceiling windows. A stay here starts at approximately Rs 25,000 a night, though prices shift depending on dates and demand. Most recently, the hotel played host to the cast of Odyssey, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, director Christopher Nolan, and producer Emma Thomas, who travelled to Mumbai for a special global fan screening.

World’s 50 Best Hotels List

The World’s 50 Best Hotels list is compiled through votes from over 800 experts across 13 regions including travel journalists, hoteliers, educators and frequent business travellers among them. It is now in its fourth year.

Beyond the Taj, two other Indian properties made the extended list of 51 to 100: Jaipur’s The Johri came in at No. 94, and The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur, also featured.

Rosewood Hong Kong held on to the No. 1 spot for the second year running, after ranking No. 3 in 2024. It also won The Best Hotel in Asia. Capella Bangkok took No. 2, followed by Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River at No. 3. Atlantis The Royal, Dubai came in fourth, and Passalacqua on Lake Como rounded out the top five.

Asia had a strong showing overall: Raffles Singapore placed 17th, and Indonesia had two entries: Desa Potato Head at No. 21 and Nihi Sumba, which re-entered the list at No. 35. In the Middle East, Atlantis The Royal won Best Hotel in the Middle East and Best Beach Hotel, while Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab climbed five places to No. 15.

Europe dominated the numbers this year, with 21 hotels on the list — the strongest regional showing. Italy and France each had six properties, the UK had four, and Austria, Greece, Monaco, Switzerland and Türkiye had one each.
